Amitabh Bachchan used to be a trendsetter in many ways, and a throwback video shared by Abhishek Bachchan from 1981 is proof of that. “In 1981, my father started the trend of movie actors from India doing shows on stage and performing to their songs. Before that, only playback singers did so,” he wrote in a long Instagram post.

In the short clip, Amitabh is seen asking his children Abhishek and Shweta Bachchan Nanda, who were around five and seven years old, respectively, at the time, to come on the stage and say hello to the audience.

“What times! As a child standing in the wings having a look at the show in awe and wonderment. Not realising at that time the legends that I used to be blessed to witness perform live. Secretly imagining myself on that stage once I grew up. As you’ll be able to see from this video, my sister couldn’t wait to receive off the stage and all I wanted to do used to be stick around,” Abhishek wrote in his caption.

The actor also shared his ‘wonderful memories’ of being on the Road with his father, his co-stars and the troupe of musicians. He fondly remembered rehearsals, sound checks and nighttime dinners in the Bachchans’ hotel suite where all the group would sit down together and relish Gujarati tiffins prepared by relatives and friends of the organisers or crew members.

#flashbackfriday In 1981, my father started the trend of movie actors from India doing shows on stage and performing to their songs. Before that, only playback singers did so. I have such a lot of memories of being on the Road with him, his co-stars and the enormous Kalyanji and Anandji and their 40 piece orchestra helmed by a young and upcoming Viju Shah ( Kalyan ji’s son and future Music Director of enormous fame). The rehearsals, sound checks, post show dinners in my parents suite in the midst of the night where tiffin’s of Gujju food ( lovingly prepared by relatives and friends of the organisers or crew members in the neighborhood in whichever city they were performing in) would be served to all the cast and musicians and everyone would discuss the show and how it went whilst a very young, fairly unknown (then) and upcoming stand-up comedian would enthrall everyone for hours on end with his mimicry and comedy till it used to be morning and time to leave for the airport to take the flight to the next city. His name used to be Johnny Lever! On the flight everybody would take over the economy class, fold forward all of the seats to make a enormous गद्दा like setting and the musicians, singers and dad would sing and jam and perhaps create a new song to be performed later that night at the next venue. This routine went on 3 days straight. I doubt they should have slept for a collective 2 hours over those weekends. Functioning purely on adrenaline! Rest all through the week and the routine would renew from Friday, again. What times! As a child standing in the wings having a look at the show in awe and wonderment. Not realising at that time the legends that I used to be blessed to witness perform live. Secretly imagining myself on that stage once I grew up. It brought back such wonderful memories. @amitabhbachchan @shwetabachchan

Abhishek also shared that they were entertained with mimicry and comedy for hours by a ‘very young, fairly unknown (then) and upcoming stand-up comedian’, who would later turn out to be famed as Johnny Lever.
