CLP leader Debabrata Saikia seeks paid leave for tea


Guwahati: Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Debabrata Saikia on Tuesday urged the State Welfare of Tea Tribes and Labour Minister Sanjay Kishan and Commissioner of Labour Welfare to issue strict directions to all of the tea garden managements of Assam to allow paid leave to the labourers, those who seek to go for vaccination at their nearby Government healthcare facilities.

In a letter to the State Welfare of Tea Tribes and Labour and Commissioner of Labour Welfare, the Congress leader wrote, “I have received complaints from many tea garden labourers that whenever they go nearby Government healthcare facilities for COVID vaccination, the tea garden managements do not grant them leave and because of this the workers have to forgo their wages for that day. This is an unacceptable situation.”

The Congress leader also advisable saying that the managements of the tea gardens can ascertain the main points regarding vaccination of individual labourers by consulting officials of the applicable healthcare facility.

Saikia also mentioned the reports claiming scarcity of provide of vaccines in the tea garden areas, thereby resulting in insufficient vaccination. “The Covid testing process has also been torpid. Only around 10 to 20% of the tea garden population has been tested so far, subsequently, I request you to take essential steps for speeding up the COVID testing process in addition to the vaccination drive in the tea garden areas of Assam,” added Saikia in his letters.
