Encourage do business from home for nursing mothers; Centre to states
Guwahati: In the newest measure taken to offer protection to the interest of workers, specifically nursing mothers, centres has asked all states to advise employers to execute ‘work-from-home’ arrangements for nursing mothers.
The decision was once taken after viewing the vulnerability of nursing mothers, throughout the ongoing Covid pandemic and to save them from getting infected by the coronavirus.
In this regard, the Ministry of Labor and Employment had issued an advisory to all of the state governments and UTs to encourage employers to allow do business from home to nursing mothers wherever the nature of work so permits.
It pointed out that along with protecting the nursing mothers throughout Covid, giving the flexibility to do business from home wherever nature of work allows to take action, will enable nursing mothers to continue to remain in employment. Thus, the implementation of this provision shall act as an enabling tool in enhancement of participation of women in labour force and this shall also contribute to creating a happy workforce, the advisory stated.
Section 5(5) of the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017(the Act) provides that where the nature of work assigned to a girl is of such nature that she may do business from home, the employer may allow her to take action after availing of the maternity benefit for such period and on such conditions as the employer and the woman may mutually agree.
