Google has added new commute tools to its search engine that show COVID-19 related advisories for your destination. Google says there was an increased in search terms among users like “commute restrictions” and “where to commute,” which is why these new tools have been added. The Explore tool has also got its own tab on google.com/commute and it has been redesigned to show more destinations, filters for destinations, commute advisory or restrictions, and more helpful information. Google has also made some updates to Google Maps on desktop to help with shuttle planning.
In a blog post, Google detailed the new commute tools for users who are planning trips. It states that with vaccines fitting more to be had, there was an increase in search terms like “commute restrictions” by country and “where to commute.” To assist these potential travellers, Google’s new commute tools will now show COVID-19 related commute advisories or restrictions, if the destination requires quarantine upon arrival or travellers will want to supply proof of vaccination.
Travellers can get notified via email approximately commute advisories or restriction updates. This will tell you whether the restrictions are lifted or reduced. This feature is to be had in the United States.
Additionally, the Explore tab has been up to date and provided its own page on google.com/commute. It’ll now show more destinations, smaller cities, national parks, at the side of destination filters to narrow down a destination based on your interests. Travellers can also make use of information like hotels, things to do, best time to visit, and more.
The blog also states Google Maps on desktop will now show several types of places where you’ll be able to stop throughout your journey such as hotels, parks, campgrounds, and rest stops. When selecting your starting and end point, these stops along the way will be seen on top of the map and you’ll be able to make a selection a specific spot to be added to your journey. These instructions can then be sent to your phone.
