Guwahati: Referred to as ‘Veerappan’, the self styled United People’s Revolutionary Front (UPRF) commander in chief Mangin Khalhau reportedly died in an in fight amongst the outfit cadres on Sunday.
Police sources claimed that he used to be shot by his own cadres somewhere close Bokajan in Karbi Angling district following a heated argument. As per police, the incident occurred on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
Khalhau used to be allegedly involved in wood smuggling, extortion and other crook activities.
Sources said that the slain militant leader received more than one bullet injuries and his body used to be retrieved by police on Sunday morning. Later the body used to be sent for postmortem post-mortem.
The outfit had expressed for a negotiation with the state government after many of its leaders had either shot down in police encounter or surrendered.
Final December, when Ulfa (independent) leader Drishti Rajkhowa laid down his arms, some 32 cadres of UPRF also followed suit.
