GUWAHATI: Congress ‘virtually’ wiped out of the four districts of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) as its lone winning candidate Sajal Kumar Singha from Srirampur constituency joined BJP on Monday.

Congress had drawn a blank even in the 2015 BTC election also. Alternatively, this time Congress contested the BTC polls in alliance with Badruddin Ajmal led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

The BTC polls, termed as a ‘semi-final’ in the run-up to the state polls of 2021, used to be also a test of Congress’s alliance with AIUDF.

Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who has been acting as a key strategy maker for BJP in BTC on Monday announced, “Singha has joined BJP from today and there are more people joining the BJP shortly.”

Singha who used to be accompanying him, said, “People have voted for change and I consider with BJP, development in my constituency will accelerate.”

Sarma said that he and Singha share a near relationship for a long time. “There has no agreement between BJP and Singha. With BJP’s development agenda, I guess some five-six more winning candidates are likely to enroll in us inside a day or two,” the senior minister said.
