GUWAHATI: The main accused of the Dibrugarh child abuse case Dr Siddhi Prasad Deuri and his wife Mitali Konwar has been arrested by the Nagaon Police on Saturday evening.
Dibrugarh district’s Superintendent of Police Thube Prateek Vijaykumar said, “Our men were stationed in Guwahati to hint their whereabouts. On Saturday we were informed by our sources that the couple were approximately to commute through Nagaon. Immediately we informed the Nagaon police. Accordingly, the Nagaon police nabbed the couple on their way.”
A source of the Nagaon police informed This correspondence that the couple were arrested on their way to Dibrugarh.
Extra Director General of Police, Law & Order, Assam GP Singh in his tweeter hand said, “The couple, wanted for causing burn injury to the domestic help child in Dibrugarh have been arrested by Nagaon police.”
The Dibrugarh police also tweeted, “Based on the FIR received on August 31 approximately the inhuman remedy of a kid employed as a domestic help, the accused Dr Siddhi Prasad Deuri and Mitali Konwar have been arrested. The couple were absconding and arrested them with the assistance of Nagaon police.”
Earlier on Friday, the Dibrugarh police arrested the daughter of the accused couple allegedly for her involvement with the case. The police also arrested a friend of the daughter and forwarded the duo on judicial custody while on Thursday, the police arrested the accused couple’s son.
It used to be alleged that Dr Deuri, who is said to be a doctor at the Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH) and his wife Mitali Konwar, Principal of Moran College, poured boiling water on the minor at Milan Nagar area in Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh town.
Notably, the revelation of the prominent couple’s inhuman act allegedly dedicated upon a minor, who used to be busy as a domestic help in their residence, sparked a wave of anger and criticism a few of the conscious citizens of the state. Though the incident occurred days back, it came to light only on August 31.
On Thursday, the students’ community of the Moran College also staged a protest in front of the college premises and demanded instant arrest of the accused.
Taking cognizance of the incident, the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights also requested the authority to conduct the investigation on fast track mode and submit the charge sheet accordingly. The Commission also directed the police to submit the Action Taken Outline inside two days.
