GUWAHATI: Assam Police have named a minimum of five persons in the heinous Sanatan Deka lynching case of Kamrup. Deka met with a tragic end on May 22, when he used to be beaten to death while on way to a market to sell vegetables.
Addressing the media, Assam Police chief Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said, “On May 22, at around 12:30 PM, Sonatan Deka while returning home by bicycle after selling vegetables, met with the accused Abdul Jalil Ali and Khabir Ali who came in his way. This led to an argument between them and the above mentioned two accused called up other accused and assaulted Deka who became unconscious because of injuries suffered. He used to be taken to the hospital at Hajo where the doctors referred him to GMCH. Thereafter, he used to be taken to GNRC, North Guwahati where he expired on May 23.”
In the charge sheet, the five accused were identified as Abdul Jalil, Khabiruddin Ahmed, Eusuf Ali Ahmed, FaizulHaque and Ruhul Ali Ahmed.
Deka who used to work at a company resorted to selling vegetables owing to the lockdown. The lynching also triggered communal tension in the area then. Many took it to social media and slammed the state police for not being in a position to offer protection to citizens.
